Abstract

The annual series of storms affecting the 10 ports on the Bay of Bengal have been examined. The series for Chittagong (Bangladesh) shows a highly significant increase in the annual mean frequency from the period 1877-1964 to the period 1965-1980. The remaining series do not show any significant change in the mean frequency. The poisson probability model is a good fit to the number of storms affecting the ports in a year as well as to the number of storms severely affecting the ports in a five-year period. This model has been utilised to evaluate the risks in terms of the probabilities of 1, 2, 3 etc., storms affecting each of the ports in a year as well as in respect of storms severely affecting the ports in a five-year period
