Abstract

Examination of precipitation records for Rajasthan, India, has shown that heavy rainfall exceeding 250 mm in one day is not uncommon in this arid zone, and that sometimes rainfall in a single day has exceeded the annual average. Heavy rainfall of this type generally occurs in association with monsoon depressions and low pressure areas which strengthen the monsoon over this area. The paper presents data on the rainfall magnitudes for one-day rainfall for different return periods, and provides a map of probable maxium precipitation. -A.S.Goudie
