Electrical forces on the surface of a charged drop or a drop placed in an electric field oppose the surface tensions forces and thus try to disintegrate it. Two atmospheric situations are described in which such a disintegration of the drop may produce sufficient number of small charged water droplets so as to modify the local charge and aerosol contents of the atmosphere. Laboratory experiments simulating these conditions are described and their implications are discussed.
