Abstract

An approach for the detection of phytoplankton pigment distribution using the fluorescence property of pigment is suggested. It is known that for high concentrations, the observed pigment concentrations depart markedly from the concentrations derived by Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) data. This discrepancy can be removed by taking observations at the bottom of Fraunhofer lines and nearby continuum. The different components of elastic scattering (i. e. , reflection, Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering) and nonelastic scattering (i. e. , fluorescence scattering) can be separated by these observations. An algorithm required for this technique is discussed.
