Abstract

The electrical structure of layer clouds is examined applying the electrochemical mechanism of WÃ¥hlin (1977). The iondroplet interaction at various levels of cloud height occurring due to this mechanism seems to be a possible explanation for the unipolar to multipolar structures observed in the layer clouds. Our computations suggest that the observed magnitudes of the electric fields in the layer clouds can be generated by this mechanism.
